Hyd encounter: Gautam Gambhir, Lekhi back cops; Maneka disapproves

New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) The BJP on Friday appeared divided over the issue of unprecedented police encounter against four rape accused in Hyderabad with a number of lawmakers backing the cops while former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi condemning the killing.
Among others, three sitting lawmakers Meenakshi Lekhi, Gautam Gambhir and Locket Chatterjee endorsed the police action in which four rape accused were killed after they were brought to the crime scene and allegedly tried to flee the spot.
The four accused were allegedly involve in rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinarian in Hyderabad last month.
"I stand with the police..." said cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir, who also said in cases involving such heinous crime, verdict of a fast track court should be final.
BJP MP from Hooghly in West Bengal Locket Chatterjee 'thanked' Hyderabad cops for the encounter and maintained that the wrongdoers involving in crime against women should be hanged to death or killed within 7-15 days.

New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi, also an advocate, speaking in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour justified the encounter saying when the police are given 'weapons' and the wrongdoers try to flee, the cops would have to act.
Earlier, outside Parliament, Ms Lekhi said the police action in Hyderabad would work as a deterrent for future rapists.
However, former Minister Maneka Gandhi said no one has the powers to take law into their own hands.
"Aap kanoon ko apne haath mein nahi ley sakte (You cannot take law in your hands)," Ms Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament.
She said, "Whatever happened (in the name of police encounter when the accused tried to flee) is not good but dangerous. Even otherwise they accused would have been hanged by court anyhow".
The BJP lawmaker from Sultanpur said: "If you are going to shoot them before due process of law has been followed, then what's the point of having courts, law and police?"
Delhi BJP leader Kapil Mishra justified the police actions in Hyderabad and tweeted: "Thank you Hyderabad Police. This is the way to deal with rapists. Hope police of other states will learn from you."
