HP HC mandates relocation of poultry farms from residential zones

Shimla, Dec 29 (UNI) In a remarkable intervention to protect public health and environmental rights, Himachal Pradesh High Court has ordered the shifting of poultry farms operating near habitations, laying down a clear directive that such units must be located at least 500 metres away from residential areas, irrespective of their size or capacity.
A bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel passed a 14-page order by allowing a writ petition filed by an ex-serviceman from Pathiar (Chatth) village in Jawali tehsil of Kangra district. The petitioner had approached the Court alleging that a privately run poultry farm was functioning barely 50 to 60 metres from residential houses, causing foul odour, fly menace and serious environmental nuisance in violation of prescribed guidelines.
After examining inspection reports submitted by revenue, veterinary and pollution control authorities, the Court noted that over 6,000 birds were being reared at the site during inspections conducted in 2024.
