HP conducted biggest disaster rescue operation in state: CM

Shimla, Oct 1 (UNI) HP Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur commended the joint efforts of Indian airforce, disaster management authorities, and other administrative departments which resulted in the saving of more than 4000 people including tourists who were trapped in the snow-hit places of the state.
Heavy snowing and rainfall wrecked havoc in the form of destruction and death in Himachal Pradesh during past weeks. Many lives where lost in the calamitous event and several others were trapped in four to five feet high snowfall.
Chief Minister Thakur told reporters here today, "Extremely high downpours and heavy snowfall in the tribal district forced the government to conduct biggest ever counter disaster move. The operation was conducted by Indian Airforce, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Management Authority. A total of 4000 tourists, students, foreigners and local were evacuated and brought to safe locations."
The government mulls to setup more units of NDRF so as to limit the tune of destruction, if such catastrophe occurs in the future.
The Chief Minister asserted that some people were marooned in such areas that if the "help" would not have reached in time then they would have been washed away with the flood water.
