Host J&K, Delhi register wins on opening day of Santosh Trophy

Katra (Jammu), Feb 11 (UNI) The host Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi registered victories by defeating their respective rivals on the opening day of the week-long 73rd Senior National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy (North Zone qualifying round) commenced here with fanfare.
J&K defeated Uttrakhand by three goals to one.
J&K Skipper Gautam Mehra scored the first goal in the 24th minute while Aakif Javaid (87th) and Shakir Ahmad Sheikh (83rd penalty) were other scorers.
Earlier, Uttrakhand took the first lead netting the ball in very seventh minute through Vishal Nagarkoti.
Meanwhile Delhi outplayed Chandigarh by a solitary goal.
In all, eight teams from North Indian States are competing in this qualify round for the National Championship. Other four participating teams are Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh.
Earlier the Championship was declared open by the Advisor to the Governor, K Vijay Kumar.
Mr Kumar also felicitated international football player from the State, Arun Malhotra after unfurling the AIFF flag to formally declare the tournament open.
However, the opening day could not attract the crowd in large to the venue.
In Group-B on Tuesday, Punjab will take on Haryana and Uttar Pradesh will meet Himachal Pradesh.
The competition is actively supported by JKSSC, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) and J&K Bank Ltd.
