Hindalco Industries Limited commissions 100 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) unit with advanced MVR system

Bhubaneshwar, Dec 15 (UNI) Hindalco Industries Limited's unit Hirakud Smelter & Power in Odisha's Sambalpur district has achieved a sustainability milestone with the commissioning of a 100 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Plant equipped with Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology.
The new facility ensures complete recycling and reuse of industrial effluents, marking a significant step toward sustainable water management and environmental stewardship, the company said in a media release on Monday.
The MVR-based ZLD system functions by evaporating and condensing wastewater. The recycled steam energy enables 90–95% recovery of clean water for reuse within the plant. This innovative system eliminates liquid effluent discharge, minimises freshwater consumption, and ensures full compliance with ZLD regulations.
With an investment of approximately Rs 35 crore, the project underscores Hindalco's strategic focus on sustainability, resource efficiency, and circular economy. The initiative aligns with the company's long-term vision of achieving water positivity.
This pioneering project positions Hindalco Hirakud Smelter & Power among the MVR-based ZLD facilities, setting a benchmark for responsible industrial practices in the aluminium sector and reaffirming Hindalco's commitment to environmental excellence and future-ready operations. UNI MCR SAS SSP
