Himanta hails SC judgment approving mechanism to evict encroachers from forest lands

Guwahati, Feb 11 (UNI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the Supreme Court has streamlined the process of eviction drives during a judgement passed on February 10.
The apex court on its judgement on February 10, modified the order of the Guwahati High Court in terms of the latest affidavit filed by the State of Assam on the mechanism adopted in carrying out large-scale encroachment drives in Doyang, South Nambar, Jamuna Madunga, Barpani, Lutumai and Golaghat reserved forests in Assam.
As per the directions issued on February 10, after eviction notices are served, the case is referred to a Joint Committee of forest and revenue officials. The committee is authorised to hear the occupants and consider any evidence they may present. Action for removal is taken only once it is established that encroachment has occurred. A 15-day notice is issued through speaking orders to vacate the unauthorised occupation.

Highest haul of contraband, inter-state drugs syndicate busted in Meghalaya

Shillong, March 6 (UNI) In one of the highest drug hauls in Meghalaya, the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) on Friday seized heroin and methamphetamine valued at approximately Rs. 51 crore in the drugs market
The ANTF of the Meghalaya police also busted an inter-state drugs syndicate by apprehending a 34-year-old man from Mizoram and 42-year-old woman from Manipur’s Moreh area on the India-Myanmar border involved in ferrying the narcotics.
