Himachal farmers demand GI tag for turmeric

Shimla, Feb 10 (UNI) Farmers belonging to Hati area of Sirmaur district have demanded that unique "ginger powder" must be given GI-tag for it's "special extraction and formulation technique."
In a letter written to vice-chancellor of Agriculture University Palampur, convener of Hati farmers' union Kundan Singh said ginger powder of Bella valley of Shillai subdivision of Sirmaur district has huge demand in Asian markets due to its special extraction and formulation technique traditionally preserved for centuries.
Bella valley has a high ginger productivity and it's product ginger powder requires protection. The branding of ginger powder is needed for the hour to increase the income of the farmers, the union leader appealed.
