Himachal Assembly passes resolution for creation of Himalayan Regiment

Tapovan, Dec 14 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Friday passed a resolution demanding enhancing of state’s quota in recruitment to defence forces and creation of Himalayan Regiment or Himachal Regiment for the purpose.
Presenting this resolution in the house after the launch break today Irrigation and Public Health Minister Mr Mahender Singh Thakur, who brought the motion under Rule 102, said Himachal’s has significantly contributed to the armed forces.
“Many soldiers from Himachal have decorated with gallantry awards for their remarkable services,” said Mr Thakur adding that joining army is a tradition ethos of this hill state as it is also a respectable mean of making a living.
He said the tough condition in the hill-state make the youth suitable for the services in army. “Himachal has limited employment avenues and if the state’s quota in the recruitment to armed forces is increased it will more opportunity of employment to the youth,”
said the minister.
Apart from it, he said, demand of Himalayan regiment is pending for long. He said the country faces biggest security threat in Himalayan region and Himachal youth are most efficient in fighting a battled in such conditions.
The resolution moved by the the minister was supported by the Parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Bhardwaj in the house
Members including Dhani Ram Shandil, Rakesh Pathania, Rakesh Singha, Vikram Singh Jaryal and Jagat Singh Negi also participated in the debate.
An argument also took place between the two sides after Negi alleged that the resolution was brought to take political mileage in the Lok Sabha polls. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur condemned Negi’s remark stating that he was doubting the good intention of government. The resolution was adopted with voice vote.
