Higher education: Javadekar announces scrapping of API

New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) To improve standards in higher education, the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Wednesday announced scrapping of Academic Performance Indicators (API), therefore it will no longer be mandatory for college teachers to do research and publish.
“College teachers will not be forced to do research. The research would become optional for teachers in colleges. This step will allow undergraduate-level teachers to focus on teaching,” said HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar at a press briefing here to highlight minimum qualifications for appointment of teachers in Universities and Colleges.
“PhD degree has been made mandatory for promotion to Assistant Professor (Selection Grade) in colleges from July 2021. Similarly, PhD degree will be mandatory for direct recruitment as Assistant Professor in Universities we. July, 2021,” said the HRD Minister.
However, the research component in the API will remain mandatory for university-level teachers, ie those teaching at the post-graduate level.
Mr Javadekar also announced one-month induction programme for newly recruited Assistant Professors in Universities/Colleges/Higher Education Institutions.
He informed that special provision for recruitment of Assistant Professors in Universities and Colleges, with PhD degrees from a University/Institution in the top 500 Global rankings, has been made.
