High alert on Nepal border for UP civic polls

Siddharthanagar, Nov 15 (UNI) High alert has been sounded on the 550-kilometre-long Indo-Nepalese border in the run-up to elections to local bodies in Uttar Pradesh and forthcoming parliamentary elections in Nepal.

Strict vigil is being maintained in Maharajganj, Siddharthanagar, Balrampur, Sravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur and Pilibhit districts in UP.

According to highly-placed sources in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Uttar Pradesh Police (UPP), the cross-border movement of people is being closely monitored along the international border.

To secure the Indian side of the border close-circuit TV cameras have been installed and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service.

Paramilitary forces are guarding not only the roads leading up to the Nepalese border, but also the access points scattered across forests and through rivers and canals.

Security and law-enforcement agencies of both the countries are constantly in touch with each other and exchanging information related to suspicious movements of human and vehicular traffic.

Elections to 33 hilly areas in Nepal will be held on November 26 and 44 constituencies in the plains would go to polls on December 5, while in Uttar Pradesh elections to local bodies in 16 districts are scheduled to be held on November 22, 26 and 29.

The international border will be sealed 48 hours before the election dates in Uttar Pradesh.
