New Delhi, Mar 12 (UNI) Health Ministry is observing World Glaucoma week from March 10-16 to make people aware about the disease.
'Glaucoma is a dangerous disease that is known to be a sneak thief of people's vision. Don't let Glaucoma steal your sight & darken your world,' the Ministry said through microblogging site.
Under this programme, several programmes are being organised throughout the nation to make people aware about its symptoms, types, treatment.
'Early detection and regular treatment can preserve vision and prevent blindness due to Glaucoma,' the Ministry tweeted in a picture message.
Making people aware about Glaucoma, the Ministry in its message said following people are at the risk-- those who are over the age of 40 years, people with family history of glaucoma or people with diabetes, thyroid or hypertension.
National Health Portal has also highlighted its symptoms-- frequent headaches, rapid change of glasses, inability to adjust eyes to darkened rooms, severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, among others.
Glaucoma often is called the "silent thief of sight," because most types typically cause no pain and produce no symptoms until noticeable vision loss occurs.
For this reason, glaucoma often progresses undetected until the optic nerve already has been irreversibly damaged, with varying degrees of permanent vision loss.
