HC directs Mizoram government to submit measures against illegal tree felling

Aizawl, Sept 11(UNI) The Gauhati High Court has instructed the Mizoram government to provide details on the steps taken or proposed to curb the widespread illegal felling of trees in Aizawl and various other villages in the state.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Michael Zothankhuma expressed concern over the ongoing deforestation in areas such as Ailawng and Reiek. The court observed that large trees, some over 30 to 40 years old, have been cut down without any clear evidence of approval from the state or relevant authorities. This included trees felled during a road construction project in Ailawng.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) highlighting the indiscriminate felling of trees in and around Aizawl. In an additional affidavit, the state authorities referenced a 1996 notification under the Mizo District (Forest) Act, 1955, prohibiting the public from cutting trees in Ailawng, Reiek, and other villages.
