Hazaribag MP raises concern over rising old age homes in Parliament

Hazaribag, Dec 16 (UNI): Hazaribag Lok Sabha MP Manish Jaiswal on today raised concerns in Parliament over the growing number of elderly being forced to live in old age homes, seeking clarity on government measures to strengthen family care and senior citizen welfare.
Raising the issue during the Winter Session, Jaiswal said senior citizens were the nation’s repository of experience and values, warning that India, though a young country today, would inevitably become an ageing nation. He cited projections indicating the elderly population could rise from around 10 crore at present to nearly 30 crore by 2050.
Replying, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B L Verma acknowledged the challenge posed by shrinking families and migration for employment. He informed the House that 706 senior citizen homes are currently operational across the country, including eight in Bihar and 15 in Jharkhand, adding that expansion depends on demand from states.
