New Delhi, Mar 24 (UNI) India said on Friday it has taken up with Canada the matter of over 700 Indian students who face deportation over fake college admission letters, and is also taking action against unscrupulous agents that were involved in the racket.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, answering questions at his media briefing, said he was not sure of the number of Indian students facing deportation.
“I am not sure of the numbers, of how many cases are there. Some have approached the Indian High Commission and we have taken up the matter with the Canadian authorities. And we are also taking action against unscrupulous agents that may be involved in this; and let me emphasize that we have always supported legal mobility,” he said.
He urged the Indian students to reach out to the Indian High Commission or Indian Consulate, “if they feel they are in trouble or they have been duped, or they need assistance of any kind”.
According to reports, over 700 Indians in Canada face deportation after their college entrance offer letters, on which they entered the country on a study visa three to four years ago, were discovered to be false. They received the deportation letters from the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) recently.
The students maintain they were unaware of the forgeries and insist they were duped by their immigration consultation agency in India that provided them the document. They claim they were victims of fraud and are protesting against the action.
