Handicrafts sector in Bengal revives in a big way: Mamata

Kolkata, Dec 8 (UNI) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said handicrafts sector
in West Bengal has been revived in a big way in the last eight-years.
On the occasion of All India Handicrafts Week begins today, Ms Banerjee said,
“This sector has seen a big revival in last the 8 years in #Bangla.”
The chief minister said at least 10 rural craft hubs have been established in the
state in collaboration with the UNESCO which has benefited 25,000 artisans.
“10 #RuralCraftHubs have been established (in collaboration with @UNESCO),
benefiting 25,000 artisans. We have set up Biswa Bangla stores to promote the
State's handicrafts,” she added.
The handloom and handicrafts sectors of the state have seen a massive revival,
under the guidance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in the last eight years.
From the issuance of identity cards, to the distribution of better equipment or the
training of artisans – the State Government has extended all help to the people
engages with this industry.
After the various fairs and exhibitions, and the Biswa Bangla Brand, handicrafts
and handloom products of Bengal have now gone global.
Biswa Bangla, the Bengal Government brand promoting the State’s indigenous
arts and crafts, is now venturing into new territories – Hyderabad, Bengaluru,
Chennai, Jaipur and Varanasi. It already has eight stores across Bengal and Delhi.
According to the secretary of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME)
Department, under which the brand functions, Biswa Bangla is about bringing back
dying arts from the brink; it is also about niche products in the premium range.
With the India-wide expansion in mind, Biswa Bangla is coming up new products.
It is making clothes out of nettle fibre and bamboo yarns. The ancient metal-casting
technique of dokra is being used to make a diversified range of products that include
high-end jewellery and home décor items. The brand is making pietra dura jamdani
saris and Ramayana saris in limited quantities.
