Guv kicks off two day Bamboo Artisans conclave in Dumka

Dumka, Sep 18(UNI) Jharkhand Governor Drauapdi Murmu inaugurated the two-day-long Bamboo Artisans Conclave at the outdoor stadium here.

The governor said different types of bamboo are naturally available in the state in abundance. There 6 lakh bamboo artisans who mainly hail from the SC/ST community.

Bamboo is the source of livelihood for 6 lakh people, mainly from the SC/ST community, who are cultivator and artisans.

The governor said that even in the Indian society bamboo is considered to be good and in many tradition rituals products manufactured by bamboo are utilised and said that Jharkhand fortunately was among the most bamboo producing states.

Ms Murmu said Bamboo is considered auspicious in Indian society and bamboo items are used in traditional rituals.

Referring to the amendments made in the forest rights act, she said now rural population is being encouraged to make incense sticks with bamboo. Women in the villages have become financially strong, but they needed bigger markets to prosper, she added.

The state government has inked an MoU with Flipkart to help bamboo artisans of the state access national and international market, Ms Murmu said.

Ms Murmu pointed out that Jharkhand has high quality bamboo, which presente huge investment opportunities in the sector. She exhorted the investors to investment in the area so that the resources of the state can be more properly utilised.

During the function the governor distributed Rs 8.90 lakh among five women self help groups involved in bamboo product manufacturing and distributed bamboo tool kits among the artisans.

The event was also addressed by Chief Secretary DK Tiwari and Industries Secretary K Ravi Kumar.

Apart from the different dignitaries Dumka DC Rajeshwari B and SP YS Ramesh were also present on the occasion.
