Gurpurab celebrated with religious fervour in Jammu

Jammu, Nov 12 (UNI) The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday celebrated Gurpurab, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji here with religious fervour and gaiety.
Attired in colourful dresses, members of the Sikh community, including women and children this morning, thronged Gurudwaras, religious congregations and offered special prayers on the occasion.
The main function was held at Gurdwara Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Chand Nagar, situated in the heart of the city.
Thousands of Sikhs from different parts of the city and outskirts visited the Gurudwara to offer the prayers.
Meanwhile, special langars were also organised for the devotees in the Gurudwaras.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu has also greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Dev's Birthday.
In a message, the Lt Governor described Guru Nanak Dev as an apostle of peace and tolerance whose teachings would continue to inspire generations, leading them to the path of righteousness and brotherhood.
He said that Guruji strove all his life for promoting social justice and equality and to bring about peace and harmony among the communities.
Mr Murmu hoped that the celebration of this auspicious event would contribute towards strengthening brotherhood and communal harmony and would be a harbinger of peace, progress and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, restrictions on traffic were imposed around the venue where main function was held while tight security arrangements were also made for incident free celebrations.
The Prakash Utsav is one of the most important festivals of Sikh community.
Ragis and Jathas recited Shabad Keertans that stressed on imbibing the higher values of life and communal harmony for which Guru Nanak Dev ji strived.
On Saturday, a colourful religious processions 'Nagar Kirtan' was also taken out to mark the celebrations.
