Gulmarg, other upper reaches receive fresh snow; rain lashes plains in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 12 (UNI) World famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other upper reaches received fresh snowfall while rain lashed plains in Kashmir valley, resulting in dip in the day temperature.



Meanwhile, the night temperature dipped and settled below normal at majority of the places in Kashmir valley, where wet weather is predicted during the next three days.



A Met department spokesperson told UNI that widespread rain and snow would occur during the next three days under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.



After witnessing bright sunshine during the last two days, Gulmarg, where ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow, received fresh about six inches of snowfall since Tuesday evening. “Gulmarg received fresh about six inches of snow since this evening. Tourists are enjoying as for some it is the first snowfall of their life. They are enjoying various snow related activities, including skiing,” a hotelier told UNI over the phone.



He said Kongdori and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project in Gulmarg, also received light to moderate snowfall. The night temperature at the ski resort improved and settled at minus 5 degree, against minus 7 degree recorded on Monday. The temperature was about a degree above normal.



Meanwhile, world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also received fresh light snowfall since this evening, resulting in dip in the day temperature. Against minus 2.6 degree recorded on Monday, the night temperature at Pahalgam was minus 3.9 degree, which is still about a degree above normal.



The upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station for Amarnath cave shrine on the traditional yatra route, also received fresh light to moderate snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery, besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni, also received moderate to heavy snowfall.



After witnessing a slight dip in the night temperature, people woke up to a chilly Tuesday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. As the days progressed, rain lashed the summer capital in the evening, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature, which settled about 3 degree below normal.



The spokesperson said that moderate rain and snow would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperature will be around 5 degree and zero degree.



Fresh snowfall was also witnessed at various places, including Qazigund and Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which remained through for one-way traffic. The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir, dipped and settled at minus 3.2 degree and minus 4.4 degree, respectively.

Bhopal, July 5 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made a courtesy call on Defence Minister Raj Nath Singh on Sunday at the latter’s New Delhi residence – the first such interaction after the former politician assumed this state’s reins in March, official sources said.
During the meeting, the visiting leader urged establishment of a Sainik School within Chambal Division, which is long pending.
