Srinagar, Jan 6 (UNI) The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg again freezed at minus 8 while elsewhere in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, the mercury was above normal today. Weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours in the Jammu and Kashmir which will be followed by isolated rain on January 9, a Met department spokesman said here this afternoon. After fresh snowfall on the slopes, Gulmarg witnessed more than two degree drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 5.8 degree, it was minus 8 degree, a notch below normal, coldest in the valley. However, the coldest at Gulmarg so far was minus 12.5 degree recorded on December 24. Pahalgam, a famed health resort in south Kashmir also witnessed drop in the minimum temperature due to clear sky during the night. Against 0.0 degree, it was minus 3.5, still 3.5 notches above normal. People in the summer capital, Srinagar witnessed further improvement in the night temperature, mainly because of cloudy weather though sky was cloudy with icy cold winds also continued. The Met spokesman said against 0.8 degree minimum temperature, it was 2.9 degree, four notches above normal in the city, where so far coldest was recorded on December 21 when it was 5.6 degree, when parts of the Dal Lake and other water bodies were frozen. He said sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 7 degree and minus 2 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in the city. There was also major improvement in the mercury in Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, Kokernag and Kupwara in north Kashmir. He said at Qazigund the minimum temperature was 3.2 degree, more than six notches above normal, Kokernag 2.4 degree, more than six notches above normal and Kupwara 0.8 degree, three notches above normal. Kargil, a border town on the Srinagar-Leh national highway closed for six winter months, witnessed considerable drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 5.6 degree, it was minus 10 degree. At Leh the minimum temperature was minus 9.3 degree against yesterdays minus 5.2 degree, he said adding the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 4 degree and minus 11 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
