Srinagar, Feb 22 (UNI) A skier from Russia died in an avalanche that hit a group comprising seven skiers and one local guide at the tourist resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.
The avalanche site was located far from the Kongdoori area, where the 4th Khelo India Winter Games are currently underway. The ongoing sporting events at Gulmarg remain unaffected by the incident, an official spokesman said.
The avalanche hit at around 2 PM at the higher reaches of Gulmarg, known as Army Ridge.
The Gulmarg Ski Patrol of the Tourism Department and J&K Police successfully rescued six Russian skiers and one local guide. However, despite their efforts, one Russian skier lost his life. The rescued individuals are currently receiving basic medical treatment under the care of the district administration. One skier sustained minor injuries but is in stable condition and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Avalanches are very common in Gulmarg. In 2010, at least 17 soldiers were killed after an avalanche hit the army’s High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg.
Two Polish skiers died in an avalanche in Gulmarg in February last year.
