Govt rules out any change in essential drugs' ceiling price calculation

New Delhi, Oct 20 (UNI) The government is presently not considering any change in the methodology of calculating ceiling prices of scheduled medicines, a statement by Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry said here today.
“Any impression regarding tightening of price control is both misleading and misplaced," the Ministry said.
However, the government is considering a change in the method of approving prices for ‘new drugs’ as defined in DPCO 2013.
Under the provisions of DPCO 2013, only the prices of drugs that figure in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) are monitored and controlled by the regulator, the National Pharma Pricing Authority (NPPA). The list currently has about 850 medicines against more than 6,000 available in the market of various strengths and dosages.
The Department of Pharmaceuticals said that it is considering medicines that have become non-scheduled drugs to be sold without any freeze on prices for a further year.
Other important issues under consideration of the Department include revision of the list of scheduled medicines on the basis of revision of NLEM by incorporating only additions and deletions to the list so that the prices of only ‘’new medicines” which are added to the NLEM will be fixed by NPPA, the statement added.
It was also considering new provisions for using Institutional price data for fixation of prices of those scheduled medicines which were being supplied directly to the Healthcare Institutions, the statement said.
To ease launch of new drugs in the market by the manufacturers, the Government has been actively interacting with the Industry and other stakeholders on the issue and exploring to do away with the present practice of deciding a new price for each applicant of “new drug”, the Ministry said.
