Govt land encroached by '54 Masjids' to be freed if BJP comes to power: Delhi MP

New Delhi, Jan 18 (UNI) BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Saturday said that government land in the city encroached by religious structures including 54 Masjids and Madrasas will be freed if the saffron party comes to power in Delhi.
"The government land on which religious places are constructed will be vacated after BJP comes to power in Delhi. Complaints have come regarding more than 54 mosques and madrassas on government land in the capital," Mr Verma tweeted.
This is not first time such an issue has been raised by him.
Participating in the debate on The Public Premises Eviction Of Unauthorized Occupants Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha last year, Mr Verma has said - "Such things can happen only in our country.....We have a culture of appeasement politics" - and had said the government needs to take actions against "illegal" construction of Mosques, Mazars and graveyards.
"The list (on such encroachment) has already been given to the Lt Governor," wrote the West Delhi lawmaker and son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma.
The Delhi Assembly elections will be held on February 8.
Earlier this week, Mr Verma had said if anyone complains to him about encroachment on government land, he will certainly take up the matter with authorities.
In highly controversial remark, he had, however, said: "But no temple or Gurudwara are found on the government land, only mosques are found".
On July 31, 2019 during monsoon session of Parliament, Mr Verma had during a Lok Sabha demate demanded that a SIT be set up in Delhi to take appropriate actions againts Mosques, graveyards and 'Mazars' those are erected on government land without proper authorization.
Notably, amid protest from Opposition members, the BJP lawmaker had said "Even in my constituency and in Delhi, there are at least 500 such places where lands belonging to DDA, Delhi government and civic bodies have been encroached and there are illegal Masjids and graveyards".

Mr Verma had also written to Lt Governor Anil Baijal last year seeking actions on these and submitted a list of such encroachment.
