Govt decides to allocate vacated 443 slots of Jet Airways to other airlines

New Delhi, Apr 18 (UNI) The Government on Thursday said it would allot 443 slots in Delhi and Mumbai, vacated after the cash-strapped airline Jet Airways suspended its flight operations temporarily.
“As many as 280 slots got vacated in Mumbai while 163 slots vacated in Delhi after the Jet Airways suspended its operations,” Civil Aviation Ministry Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola said on Thursday.
Mr Kharola said he had a series of meetings with airlines, airport operators and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials so that they can chalk out a strategy to minimize passenger inconvenience.
The Secretary said this would be an interim allocation for three months only and after that the period would be extended by one month or so.
For the purpose, they have constituted a committee of airport operators, representatives of Airports Authority of India and the DGCA, who will allocate the Jet Airways’ slots on priority basis.
Requesting the airlines to provide advance induction plan, Mr Kharola said in the interim allocation, airlines which have extra capacity will get preference in slot allocation.
He added: “After the completion of the Jet Airways’ bidding process and it resumes operations, the airline would be given its old slots on priority basis,” he added.
The Secretary said in the past few months, around 75 planes have been grounded while other airlines have been able to induct around 58 aircraft only. Therefore, there is a deficit of 17 planes. However, the arrival of 30 new planes by July will increase the capacity.
He said the state-owned Air India has started “rescue fare” for the overseas passengers of the Jet Airways.
