Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 19 (UNI) CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Sunday opined that it is the high time to think about the relevance of Governor's posts in the country and said that states no longer require them.
CPI(M) general secretary made the remark while addressing a press conference here. Mr Yechury was here to attend the three-day Central Committee Meeting at EMS Nagar in Vilapilsala.
His comment was followed by war of words between Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the Governor's decision to seek a report from the state government over its decision to move to Supreme Court against the newly amended law without informing him.
Stating that Governors should function as per the Constitution, he said, "It is the high time to think about the relevance of Governor's posts in the country."
Hailing the ongoing countrywide protests against the CAA, he said his party units across the country will conduct house-to-house campaign to explain to the people, the ‘link’ between Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC),
Urging the masses to not co-operate with NPR, he said, "The states that oppose CAA will be asked to not co-operate with NPR."
Earlier, Yechury had maintained that the Centre should come clean on de-radicalisation camps operating in India.
His comment was followed by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat's disclosure that de-radicalisation camps were operating in the country.
