Government must enact law for migrant labourers: Chhattisgarh speaker

Raipur 16 Jul (UNI) Speaker in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Dr Charandas Mahant on Tuesday asked the government to consider enactment of a law for labourers migrating to other states in search of livelihood.
Intervening into supplementary questions on this issue asked by BJP MLA Dr Krishnamurthy Bandhi during question hour in State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Dr Mahant said that the government must consider formulating a concrete law for the skilled and unskilled labourers migrating to other states in search of livelihood. Labourers in the state go to other states to work in brick kilns, he said, maintaining that they are considered as experts in this work.
Earlier, BJP MLA Dr Bandhi said that labourers migrating to other states in search of livelihood are often subjected to torture by the police and contractors. Demanding omission of the term 'migration', he added that no effective steps were being taken for protection of the labourers. Cases of keeping labourers hostage are often reported, he said.
