New Delhi, Jan 8 (UNI) Google Doodle on Monday paid a tribute to fearless Nadia, also known as Hunterwali in Hindi films, on her birth anniversary.
Nadia, born as Mary Ann Evans in Australia, was an actress and stunt-woman who made her mark in the Hindi film industry by performing risky stunts. She acted in nearly 40 films and often essayed the role of an Indian woman fighting injustice and saving people from oppressive colonial rule.
She learnt many skills and stunts while growing up including horse-riding, hunting, fishing and shooting. She also worked as a circus performer which helped her with performing stunts. It is said that she changed her name to Nadia on the advice of an Armenian Astrologer who asked her to change her name to a letter beginning with ‘N’.
The blue-eyed blonde is most remembered most for her role in Hunterwali in 1935.
She married Homi Wadia, a film maker and founder of Wadia Movitone and remained married to him till her death on January 9, 1996.
Nadia acted in films like Desh Deepak and Noor-e-Yaman before getting a break in Hunterwali.
She will be remembered as the original Stunt Queen of India.
Today is her birth anniversary and tomorrow happens to be her death anniversary.
