Godhra riots: SC to dispose off next month plea of Setalvad, NGOs, against freezing of their accounts

New Delhi, Jan 20 (UNI) The Supreme Court today decided to take up next month for a final disposal, the pleas filed by social activist Teesta Setalvad and her two NGOs, challenging the freezing of their accounts by the Gujarat Police. A bench, headed by Justice Dipak Misra and also comprising Justice R Banumathi, said, 'On February 2, we would start hearing the final arguments on the pleas.' Setalvad, along with her husband Javed Anand, is accused in connection with the alleged misuse of funds meant for making a museum in the Gulbarga society in Gujarat. The funds meant for the rehabilitation and welfare of the victims of riots in Gujarat in February-March 2002, including construction of a "dream museum," were allegedly misused by Setalvad and Anand, the Gujarat police had earlier told in an affidavit filed before the Apex Court. Denying any wrongdoing and misuse of funds, Setalvad and Anand, claimed innocence in the entire case and had blamed political motives behind it. "I have not committed any offence in the case," she had said. On July 22 this year, the Gujarat police had filed an affidavit in the Apex Court and said that Setalvad and her husband, Anand, as trustees of two trusts -- Sabrang Trust and Citizens for Justice and Peace -- have allegedly "misappropriated funds of charity and converted these funds for their own use." An FIR had been filed last year against the activist and others for allegedly misappropriating the Rs 1.5 crore funds meant for the riot victims. All the respective parties, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, and senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Setalvad and her husband Anand, unanimously agreed for the date suggested by the bench. During the last hearing, Gujarat government had sought to file reply to the petition. The bench was today informed that it had already filed an affidavit in this regard. UNI XC RP1930
