Mysuru, Jan 4 (UNI) Jnanapith awardee and senior play writer Girish Karnad will inaugurate the ‘Bahuroopi-2018’--National Theater festival of city’s own repertory Rangayana from January 14.
Deputy Commissioner D Randeep released the posters and
invitations of the eight-day long theater carnival in the presence
of Rangayana Director Bhagirathi Bai Kadam, Joint Director of
Rangayana V N Mallikarjunaswamy here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Randeep said, "Bahuroopi has a
significant place in the tourist calendar of the city and it draws
thousands of theatre buffs during the week-long annual theater
festival. Mysuru being the cultural capital of the state also needs
to be recognised as ‘theater capital’ and ‘cinema capital’ of the
State as the city has been promoting theater and cinema activities.
I would also write to the tourism department to add Bahuroopi
Theater Festival in the International Tourist Calendar."
The theme of the Bahuroopi is ‘Migration.’
The city’s own repertory Rangayana decided to consider the theme
‘migration’ for the Bahuroopi as all living beings including humans
were migrating from one place to the other in search of food,
shelter, and livelihood when there is threat to their existence and
thus this year Bahuroopi will focus on Migration, its affects and
the possible solutions.
Variety of plays will be staged during the Festival. A total of
nine plays in different languages and from different states will be
staged. Besides, there will also be six solo shows during the
theater carnival.
As part of the Bahuroopi, over 24 films including Documentaries,
Classic Films of foreign language and Indian languages will also be
screened at Sri Ranga Auditorium of Rangayana and the film screening
will be coordinated by K Manu and Prashanth Hiremath.
A national seminar on the theme ‘Migration’ will also be held as
part of the Festival and the inaugural function will be held on
January 20 and will be inaugurated by Mahesh Elkunchwar, renowned
Marathi playwright.
Over 70 stalls will be set up to sell and exhibit various books
at Rangayana and stalls to sell handloom products. A Desi Food
Festival will also be organised for the foodies who will attend the
theater festival.
