Hamirpur (HP), Nov 28 (UNI) A private Company in Delhi would undertake the renovation work of Gandhi Chowk memorial building here at a cost of Rs 20 lakh to bring a new look.
The Gandhi Chowk memorial building is located near the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Hamirpur.
An agreement has been reached between the Company and the local civic body for the renovation work, its President Manoj Minhas said.
As per the agreement, a new structure will be constructed again by demolishing the present structure.
The work will be completed within six months and the company had completed all the formalities.
The entire cost of this will be borne by the company at its own level. The repair work from the side of the company will be started only after the results of the assembly election are out.
The Gandhi chowk had come into being in 1972 when Hamirpur was made a fully-fledged district. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was erected there. Later, it was reinstalled as the statue was desecrated by anti-social elements.
At present, posters and boards were installed at various places at the Gandhi Chowk memorial building, which are eclipsing the beauty of Gandhi Chowk.
Benches, fans, and coolers will be installed for people to sit. Due to this, the passengers will get proper seating facilities. The Gandhi Chowk memorial building is mainly used for public functions and rallies and processions. In such a situation, people will get proper seating facilities due to the renovation of the Gandhi Chowk memorial building.
It is also a major centre of attraction for the people.
Leaders of all political parties including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Vice President, Venkaiah Naidu, and former Chief Ministers, Shanta Kumar, Virbhadra Singh, Ram Lal Thakur and Prem Kumar Dhumal had addressed the people from there on many occasions.
However, it is reminded only when Gandhi Jayanti comes. The district administration and people from the Congress party clean the statue of Bapu and offer flowers and garlands on the occasion.
On other days, people used to sit there on benches kept there. On the other hand, activists of political parties, trade unions and employee organizations also paste their posters outside the structure to tell the people what they want.
