French mountaineer Destivelle receives Piolets d'Or Lifetime Achievement award

Ladek-Zdroj, Poland, Sep 19 (Xinhua) French rock climber and mountaineer Catherine Destivelle was awarded Piolets d'Or Lifetime Achievement during the 25th Ladek Mountain Festival here on Saturday. She became the first female to receives the prestigious honor of alpinism.

Born in 1960, Catherine Destivelle started making a name for herself in the climbing world during the 1980s. In 1992, she became the first woman to complete a solo ascent of the Eiger's north face. Her other notable climbs include the Bonatti Route on the north face of the Matterhorn and the southwest pillar of the Aiguille du Dru.
