Free, compulsory education till age 18 could curb trafficking, child labour: MPs convention

New Delhi, Nov 20 (UNI) A group of MPs on Wednesday urged the government to make education free and compulsory till the age of 18 years, in a bid to protect socio-economically vulnerable children from being trafficked and pushed into child labour.
In a consultation organised in the national capital on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989-2019) by the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF), Members of Parliament, Amee Yajnik, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Vivek Tankha, Manoj Kumar Jha, Kunwar Danish Ali and Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu urged the government to initiate steps to draw disadvantaged and vulnerable children into the formal school system.
The parliamentarians exhorted the government to extend the age for free and compulsory education under the Right to Education Act from 14 to 18 years.
