Srinagar, Dec 29 (UNI) Four militants were killed on Saturday by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Pulwama, where a militant was killed, a defence ministry spokesman said.
Col Rajesh Kalia told UNI that on a tip-off about the presence of militants at BanHanjan Payeen Rajpora in Pulwama, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation this morning.
However, when the security forces were moving towards particular area in hilly orchards, the militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons, which was retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.
Col Kalia said four militants were killed and a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered.
Additional security forces have been deployed to prevent demonstrations near the encounter site, they said, adding that internet service remained suspended in Pulwama for the second day today. The service was suspended early Friday when an encounter took place in which militant Ishfaq Yousuf Wani was killed.
Security forces resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators near the encounter site.
