Four held for possessing Rs 21.70 lakh in foreign currency near Mumbai

Thane, Mar 25 (UNI) Altogether four people ,including a woman,were arrested on Sunday from the Mumbra town of this district on the alleged charge of unduly possessing foreign currencies worth Rs 21.70 lakh,informed the police on Monday.
The seized stash of foreign currencies consists Arab Emirates Dirham 87,000 along with USD 7,700,which if converted becomes INR 21.70 lakh,stated police.
According to police, based on a tip-off, the sleuths kept a strict vigil near a petrol pump in Mumbra and accordingly intercepted a vehicle around 1830 hours on Sunday.
While frisking the vehicle occupants,the sleuths discovered the foreign currencies and the accused failed to prove the rightful ownership of the money,said police.
The arrested accused have been identified as Abdul Shaikh (54),Rafique Khan (52),Amzad Khan (42),and woman Mumtazjan Shaikh (47),mentioned police.
All the accused have been booked under the relevant CrPC section and the Enforcement Directorate as well as the Income Tax Department has been intimated about the economic offence,added police.
The security checks to combat the economic offences have been stepped up to keep the fast-approaching Lok Sabha polls clean of shoddy transactions,remarked police.
