Kuala Lumpur, Aug 7 (UNI) Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Friday announced his plans to launch a new political party, months after being sacked from a party, he himself founded to win the 2018 national elections.
Addressing the members of the press, Mr Mahathir said that his party would be an ethnic Malay-dominated party, which would not ally itself, either with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by current Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, or the main opposition party Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Mr Mahathir (95), had set up the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) in 2016, with himself as Chairman and Mr Muhyiddin as President. The party won power in 2018, along with several other PH component parties.
In 2020, a rift in PPBM saw leaders aligned with Mr Muhyiddin forming the PN coalition with Opposition, while Mr Mahathir and several Members of Parliament (MPs) aligned to him were expelled from the party.
