Flyover collapse toll rises to 24, 79 injured: Police Commissioner

Kolkata, Apr 1 (UNI) The death toll of flyover collapse in busy Burrabazar area in north Kolkata yesterday rose to 24. Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said today that with the recovery of three bodies and one still trapped under the debris, the toll to Vivekananda Road flyover collapse has risen to 24 and injured 79. The CP said the efforts were on to extricate the trapped bodies as the rescuers continued to rummaging through the debris since the tragedy occurred. He said barring some critically injured people, most of the wounded people have been released from the hospitals of Medical College and Marwari Relief Society in central and north Kolkata. Experts from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been working overnight to trace if any survivor lying under the debris. A separate report said eight seriously injured people were still admitted into the Medical College and Hospital. Mr Rajiv Kumar said some officials/workers of the construction company have been detained. Police also lodged an FIR against the Hyderabad based IVRCL Limited, which is executing the multi crore rupees project since 2009. The construction company washed off their hands by saying it " God's act." West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said no one will be spared if found guilty in the project, which can not be stopped under the present circumstances. 'An investigative committee with experts from IIT and JU ( Jadavpur University) will be formed to look into this tragedy. Rescuing people is our priority. Their lives matter most. I do not want to make any political comments right now. The project began in 2009 under CPI(M). But this mishap has happened in our time so we will do what it takes," Ms Banerjee said. To counter it the opposition Left Front has condemned Ms Banerjee for holding responsible the previous government for the under-construction flyover disaster. In a statement, Left Front Chairman Biman Basu said the Chief Minister made a "strange" comment, saying that the previous Government is responsible for the accident since construction for the flyover began during its rule. "Naturally, question arises as to which portion of the flyover has collapsed ? The portion which was built during the Left rule or the one erected during the Trinamool Congress regime ? It is a pretext to evade the Trinamool Congress Government's responsibility for the incident," he said. Mr Basu said at this moment the most important task is to rescue the affected people and arrange proper treatment of those injured. 'At the same time, we demand rescue of the trapped people with the help of the disaster management team and the army," he added. UNI TEAM PC-BM ADG RAI1255
