Floods devastate 2,000 villages in Punjab: Ludhiana faces threat from Sutlej River

Chandigarh, Sept 6 (UNI) The swollen Sutlej River has intensified flood risks in Punjab, submerging approximately 2,000 villages and destroying crops across lakhs of acres.
On Friday midnight, a breach in the embankment at Sasrali village in Ludhiana led to widespread flooding of agricultural fields. Authorities, with assistance from the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), constructed a temporary ring embankment to contain the water flow toward populated areas. However, erosion of this structure was reported on Saturday, prompting the construction of a third embankment to mitigate further damage.
Officials have warned that if floodwaters breach this barrier, 14 villages and areas from Rahon Road to Samrala Chowk could be inundated. Ludhiana’s Deputy Commissioner, Himanshu Jain, was seen actively participating in relief efforts, assisting locals in reinforcing embankments with sandbags. Many residents have begun evacuating villages near the Sutlej River as a precaution, while Army teams work tirelessly to control the situation.
