Jakarta, Indonesia, Feb 22(UNI) As many as seven people died and 23 injured in a flash flood in Indonesia's Yogyakarta province, state disaster agency said on Saturday.
According the agency, the accident took place when 249 students of a school scout club were trekking near a river and the volume of water from the upstream suddenly rose with a strong current due to torrential rains.
'While they were trekking, suddenly the flood with strong current hit and swept away some students,' the national disaster mitigation agency spokesperson Agus Wibowo said in a statement.
The injured were rushed to a hospital in Yogyakarta.
He added that the the search and rescue operation was on to find the three students who remained missing.
The Southeast Asian archipelago is regularly hit by floods during the rainy season, which started in late November.
Torrential rain in January triggered flooding and landslides that killed nearly 70 people in and around the capital, Jakarta, while thousands more were forced to evacuate to shelters.
