First major sports meet after outbreak of COVID gets underway in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 6 (UNI) The 36th National Junior Athletics Championships, 2021, got underway at the Sarusajai Stadium here, with the participation of over 1600 athletes representing 32 states.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the five-day championship, in which athletes in age categories under-14, 16, 18 and under-20 will compete in 100 events.
Sonowal thanked the chairman of Athletics Federation of India Adille J Sumariwalla and Union Minister of State (i/c) for Sports and Youth Welfare Kiren Rijiju for allowing Assam to host the event, which is the country’s single largest sports event since the outbreak of COVID 19 in the early part of last year.
