Volgograd,Russia,June 28 (UNI) Jan Bednarek's 60th minute goal gave Poland 1-0 win over Japan, as the Samurai Blue advanced into the knockout phase of the World Cup on Thursday.
Though it had the same number of points as Senegal and the same number of goals scored and conceded, Japan had fewer yellow cards in the tournament and therefore advanced.
Poland's star striker Robert Lewandowski missed a good chance to double the lead in the 74th minute.
Japan needed a point but circumstances also allowed for a defeat following a 2-1 victory over Colombia and a 2-2 draw against Senegal. But after going behind they had to hope the result of the game in Samara went their way while avoiding yellow cards to stay ahead of Senegal.
