Farmers to stage massive protest demanding water release from Karnataka

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Aug 17 (UNI) Farmers and farm workers associations, affiliated to the left parties in the Delta districts of Tamil Nadu have decided to stage a massive protest on Friday, demanding the Centre to direct Karnataka to release the shortfall of 70 TMC of water in River Cauvery as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award for raising atleast a single samba crop in the Delta region.
The farmers will block roads at 500 places in Tiruchirapalli, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts to draw the Central government’s attention towards the plight of farming community, K Balakrishnan, State President of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association said here today.
He said the Cauvery delta farmers have lost kuruvai paddy crop in the last five seasons and now even a single samba crop cannot be raised as water from the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur is yet to be released due to insufficient storage. Though, the water level in all the four major dams, except Krishna Raja Sagar is almost full in Karnataka, it is reluctant to release water due to Tamilnadu as per the final award of the Tribunal.
