Farmers block Bathinda-Chandigarh highway after being stopped by police; clashes in Patiala, Sangrur

Chandigarh, Feb 18 (UNI) Tensions escalated across Punjab as members of the Bharatiya Kisan union (Ekta Ugrahan) launched a massive march toward Bathinda, leading to significant disruptions and clashes with law enforcement.
The farmers were intercepted by police while attempting to reach the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office to hold a demonstration. Following the blockade near Rampuraphul, the protesters sat on the Bathinda-Chandigarh national highway, effectively halting traffic and forcing authorities to divert vehicles through rural link roads.
The protest turned volatile in other parts of the state as well. In Patiala's Samana, a skirmish broke out between police and farmers, resulting in several protesters being detained. Similar scenes of physical confrontation were reported in Sheron village of Sangrur district, where police had to struggle with the crowd before taking several activists into custody. The situation remained tense as police officials continued negotiations with the farmers, who have remained steadfast in their blockade for over half an hour.
