Explore possibilities of making affordable drugs through biotechnology: Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi, Feb 5(UNI) Expressing concern over the sky-rocketing costs of treatment of some of the terminal illnesses such as cancer, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan urged the biotechnologists and drug scientists to focus on making cheaper and affordable drugs.
Speaking at the inaugural of two-day Global Biotechnology Summit – Destination India at Vigyan Bhawan here, Dr Vardhan said it is true that great strides have been made in the field of science and medicine but the ailments such as dengue and malaria still do not have any vaccine.
The cost of treatment of cancer has become prohibitive and in some cases the people have to sell their homes to pay for the treatment, Dr Vardhan said, urging the scientists to explore limitless possibilities offered by the biotechnology. India expects the biotechnology sector to become a 100 billion dollar strong industry by 2020.
