ExpEYES to turn laptops to lab for Physics study in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, May 19 (UNI) In the backdrop of over 45,000 classrooms (std 8 to 12) in the State made Hi-Tech, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has devised mechanisms for Higher Secondary Classes for undertaking physics experiments in digital forms.

This is facilitated through the introduction of a FOSS software and hardware viz ExpEYES (Experiments for Young Engineers and Scientists) which has to be connected to the laptops. This facility for Physics studies is in addition to the Maths IT Labs for Mathematics which would be introduced from this year.

Currently, there are as many as 36 practical activities instructed on the Higher Secondary section. In parallel to the Lab experiments, students can easily undertake the electronics, electrical, mechanical, thermal and sound experiments through ExpEYES using a computer.

ExpEYES is a 4 channel Oscilloscope which has Square, Sine and Triangular wave generators. Experiments such as creation of AC/DC signals, sonometer, resonance column single pendulum, helical spring etc can be easily and precisely undertaken through ExpEYES.

This will also facilitate the detailed analysis of data obtained from experiments done in Labs too. In most cases, equipments such as Oscilloscope may not be available for physics experiments in schools.

Not only ExpEYES fills such gaps, but also enables over 150 physics experiments at present. This enables the teacher to take a live demo in classrooms while teaching the theory part in addition to the students trying out the experiments in labs.

“As part of the ongoing IT Vacation training for Higher Secondary school teachers, ExpEYES kits for all physics teachers have been made available”, said Mr K Anvar Sadath, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of KITE.

As a continuation to this, all schools will be equipped with ExpEYES kits. Organisations such as ICFOSS, Inter University Accilerator Centre(IUAC), New Delhi and Free Software Community are partnering with KITE for this project.

In 2017, a group of 20 teachers were given specific training by IUAC at New Delhi . It is in continuation to this programme that the present training for over 2700 Physics teachers in Higher Secondary is being conducted.

The use of Open Source software in ExpEYES enable modifications in the source code for new experiments which would be added to the list. The recently rolled out IT@School GNU / Linux 18.04 Operating System by KITE already has the ExpEYES applications incorporated.

Over 150 experiments in Higher Secondary level in topics such as Motion, Thermal properties, oscillation, waves, electric potential, capacitance, current electricity, magnetism, electronic magnetic induction, AC, semi-conducters etc have been already made ready.

In addition to these, ExpEYES will also facilitate numerous experiments in High School classes such as ohm’s law, resonance, analog and digital, half-wave,full-wave rectification etc, he added.
