New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) India and the US are looking to collaborating further on cyber security, space and defence technology and digital economy as the two countries seek to deepen strategic convergence on security and foreign policy.
Ahead of the third 2+2 talks between defence and foreign ministers here on Tuesday, the US recognised and welcomed India's emergence as a "leading regional and global power", and said it looked to exploring cooperation in new and emerging technology in a range of areas.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also said that technology, connectivity and trade are at the heart of contestation in today's world, and many of the new and emerging technologies have significant implications for diplomacy, national security and global rule making.
The MEA has set up a New, Emerging and Strategic Technologies (NEST) division to look into issues pertaining to these technologies and collaborating with foreign partners in the field of 5G and Artificial Intelligence.
Cyber security is proving to be critical in nations' national security and economy in today's networked world.
"We will take every opportunity to really advocate a strong digital economy and partnership in the countries we're going and seek support of the Clean Network, which we think, works to every country's advantage," US officials said on Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Defence Minister Mark Esper's visit to the region.
The US' 5G Clean Network advocates a strong digital economy and partnership.
The US is looking to increase military-to-military cooperation in emerging technologies.
Both sides held an inaugural Defence Cyber Dialogue in September.
The two countries are also looking to have a defence space dialogue in the coming year, most likely in early 2021, officials said.
Both ISRO and NASA are collaborating on multiple fronts like developing NISAR satellite and sharing of data, planetary exploration, human space flights and commercial space cooperation.
Increased partnership between the two countries can accelerate the development and commercialisation of technology solutions, trusted vendors in the entire 5G ecosystem and promote trade and commerce in ICT, individual services, said Greg Kalbaugh, deputy under secretary, policy, international trade administration, adding that this would strengthen economic relationship.
"We have seen conditions emerge for an organic and deeper partnership -- not an alliance on the postwar model, but a fundamental alignment along shared security and geopolitical goals, shared interests, and shared values," said the State Department earlier this month.
