Existing tracks on various sections not fit for high speed trains, feasibility study ordered: SCR GM

Hyderabad, Jan 25 (UNI) South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav has said that the existing railways tracks on various sections in the country are not fit for high speed trains and the government had approved high speed train project on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route only. Talking to reporters after showcasing the ongoing works of second phase MMTS, being carried out between Moula Ali-Cherlapalli section and Cherlapalli-Ghatkesar section, to the media, here yesterday, Mr Vinod said 'basically, high speed trains run 300 kms per hour and it needs total different infrastructure'. Now, the existing tracks on various sections in the country are fit for maximum 130 km/hour and most of the routes are fit for 110 km per hour, he said, adding about mobility, we are trying to improve these tracks to increase the speed up to 160 kms per hour which is known as semi-high speed. The work is going on in some of the identified places across the country, Mr Vinod, who took the charge as SCR GM recently said, as far as high speed trains are concerned, it is a very ‘capital intensive project’. Basically, right now the government of India had approved Mumbai-Ahmedabad project and arrangement with the Japanese government is finalized for funding. The project is likely to take off this year, he added. Already a new company has been set up to execute this project and the government of India is in the process of appointing new Managing Director, he said and added that in some other sections including SCR, feasibility study has been ordered. Though the feasibility study is being carried out, actual sanction of the work will take some time, Mr Vinod said. Only after we start (high speed trains) between Mumbai-Ahmedabad and we see the experience, then gradually based on the feasibility report, submitted by the consultants, of various sections, we will be taking up sections one-by-one, he said Right now, there is no sanction of high speed train project, other than Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, he added.
