Execution debate spurs, GoI tells apex court hanging far safer, faster than injection or firing squad

Execution debate spurs, GoI tells apex court hanging far safer, faster than injection or firing squad

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that hanging was far safer and faster for execution than a lethal injection or a firing squad.
The Centre contended that hanging was a quick and certain means to execute the death penalty.
Besides, it also eliminated the possibility of a lingering death.
The GoI response came to a Public Interest Litigation filed by apex court counsel, Rishi Malhotra, seeking an alternative way of execution other than hanging.
Malhotra had filed the petition in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to provide an alternate method of execution other than hanging.
A copy of the counter-affidavit, filed by Union of India, was accessed by United News of India.
The PIL sought to declare that the right to die by a dignified procedure was a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
In its counter affidavit, the Government of India stated that hanging as a mode of execution was easy to assemble.
Malhotra submitted that hanging would unnecessarily sharpen the poignancy of the prisoner's execution.
