EU may suspend visa liberalization for Georgia

Moscow, Sep 20 (UNI) The European Union may consider temporarily suspending the visa liberalization regime for Georgia following the adoption of a law banning LGBT propaganda (the LGBT movement is banned in Russia as extremist) in the country, a European Commission spokesperson said on Friday.
The EU is closely monitoring developments in Georgia and is ready to respond appropriately, the spokesperson told RIA Novosti, adding that the assessment of Georgia's visa regime could be triggered either by security risks to the Schengen Area or by further democratic backsliding in Georgia.
The dialogue between the EU and Georgia on visa liberalization includes specific criteria, such as ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and preventing discrimination, the representative said, adding that the European Commission conducts annual reviews to assess compliance with these criteria.
