EU may impose sanctions on Belarus: German FM

Brussels, Aug 11 (UNI) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas indicated on Tuesday that the European Union may reimpose sanctions against Belarus in the wake of the recent presidential elections.
The Belorussian elections which took place on Sunday, preliminary data by the Belarusian Central Electoral Commission, claimed that incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko is leading race with 80.08 percent votes, while his main opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is in second place with 10.09 percent votes. Tikhanovskaya's and her supporters have refused to recognize the results. Several Belarusian cities witnessed protests on Sunday and Monday.
Sputnik quoted Maas saying at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the EU needs to discuss and possibly reconsider its decision to lift sanctions from Belarus "I would like to reiterate that the EU lifted sanctions off Belarus because it made steps in the right direction, for instances, regarding release of political prisoners. However, we must seriously discuss within the EU if we can maintain this in light of the recent events or if the decision must be reviewed".
