Environmentalists to stage agitation in Bengaluru on Jan 5 demanding the Government to stop widening of Goa-Belagavi NH

Belagavi, Dec 18 (UNI) Noted Environmentalist and veteran film Actor Suresh Hebbalkar today said that Environmentalists will stage agitation at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on January 5 to bring pressure on the government to immediately stop Goa-Belagavi National Highway widening works.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that the Western Ghats forests of South India are very ancient, nearly 90 million years old. They are a source of very important avenues for the population of South India. Contractors have started felling trees and thousands of trees on the road were cut in the name of development work. " They are a treasure trove of this part of the landscape. Our economy, culture, irrigation, electricity and agriculture depend on these precious forests of the Western Ghats and we cannot be a silent spectator for distraction".
Nearly six States of South India cover these pristine ecologically significant forests which are enriched with many minerals, medicinal plants and many precious wood species. There are beautiful waterfalls, valuable Ayurvedic medicinal plants, etc.. and streams and irrigate lakhs of hectares of agriculture land. Environment protection is very necessary now, he added.
