'Ms. Marvel' makers want to make 'big action movie' in India

By Faizal Khan
Cannes, May 27 (UNI) Moroccan-origin filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, directors of 'Ms. Marvel' superhero series, say they dream of making a 'big action movie' in India.
"One day we want to make a big action movie in India," El Arbi and Fallah, who grew up watching Hindi films as a Moroccan-origin migrant in Belgium, told UNI at the 75th Cannes film festival where their new feature film, 'Rebel', is part of the festival's official selection.
The two filmmakers, known for directing the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence-starring 'Bad Boys for Life' (2020), have cast actor Farhan Akhtar in a role not yet revealed in 'Ms. Marvel' series, which is set for release on Disney+ on June 8.
"Farhan (Akhtar) is a wonderful actor and director," said El Arbi, praising the Indian actor for his works in Bollywood. "We talked to him before casting him in the series," said the series director.
El Arbi and Fallah, both born in Belgium to Moroccan-origin parents, have been heavily influenced by Bollywood films they watched at home while growing up in a traditional Moroccan family. Morocco became a major market for Hindi films in the 1960s and went on to dominate theatres in the North African country for decades with their song and dance sequences.
'Rebel', a musical that deals with radicalisation of young Muslim men in Europe, premiered at the Cannes festival on Thursday. "For us Bollywood is also a form of expression. If you make a musical, you can't go around paying homage to that genre because that is what Bollywood is," said El Arbi. "Making a Bollywood movie one day, inshallah, that would be great."
Written by Pakistani-born British screenwriter Bisha K Ali, 'Ms. Marvel' series is about a teenage superhero, Kamala Khan, played by Pakistani-Canadian actor Iman Vellani. Indian-American filmmaker Meera Menon directed the second episode of the series, which has other Indian actors like Mohan Kapur along with Akhtar.
El Arbi and Fallah are also directing the upcoming DC Comics superhero film, 'Batgirl' starring American actors Leslie Grace, J K Simmons, Michael Keaton and Brendon Frazer.

'Rebel' tells the story of two brothers in a Brussels neighbourhood in Belgium influenced by the civil war in Syria. Kamal, one of the brothers, arrives in Syria to help the war victims, but is forced to join a rebel militia in Raqqa. Back home in Belgium, his younger brother Nassim becomes an easy prey for radical recruiters, who promise him to reunite with Kamal. "It is a difficult story, but such stories have to be told," said El Arbi.
